Child of the Night

‘Child of the Night’ is a moving, powerful and thought provoking musical, which spans the life of ‘stolen child’ Rachel, and her struggle for survival. It is a story about hope, love and courage, with a positive message of reconciliation. It was written by Christine Bain, after she covered the national inquiry into the stolen generation while an ABC television journalist. She collaborated with composer and cultural adviser, Bob Randall, who is a traditional owner of Uluru, and the son of a Pitjantjatjara woman. Bob wrote two songs for this musical, and ensured the storyline was accurate, as many of Rachel’s experiences are similar to his own, after he was removed from his family when he was aged seven. Bob’s song ‘Brown Skin Baby’ released in the 1960’s, is heralded for raising public awareness about the stolen generation. ‘Child of the Night’ story features a tragic love story, an insightful journey and exhilarating triumph, spanning two decades and several states. The music is a wide mixture; from trilling chorus songs, to tear jerking ballads to the simple folk music which reflects life in the Australian outback.

“Audiences are treated to an emotion-driven story…the theatre comes alive with a human drama with a striking relevance to those in the audience…which has enormous personal meaning.” ARTiFacts Magazine.
